Mavs fall by three at Westminster

Chock, Osterman tally hat tricks while Streby racks up career-high seven draws controls

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah— Sofia Chock and freshman Lilly Osterman both recorded their first hat tricks of the season in Colorado Mesa University's Saturday afternoon Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game at Westminster University.

The Mavericks dropped the game 16-13 and are now 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.

The Griffins won for the fourth straight time and improved to 5-2 overall and lead the RMAC standings at 3-0 with homes wins over the three teams picked ahead of them in the Preseason RMAC Coaches Poll over the last nine days.

Saturday' win was their first over the Mavericks since 2012 and just the second in the 25 all-time meetings between the teams.

The Mavericks trailed for much of the game and were down 10-4 at the half.

The Griffins then scored two of the first three third-quarter goals after Chock had scored the quarter's opener to build a 12-5 lead.

However, Osterman then scored three straight woman-up goals in in a span of just three minutes and 16 seconds as the Mavericks went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 9:09 left.

The Griffins then scored with 7:50 left to extend the lead to 13-11 before Kaylee Kittle scored a pair of woman-up goals to the game 13 with 5:47 to go.

The Griffins then scored the game's final three goals over the final five minutes to claim the win.

The Griffins finished the game with a 31-22 advantage in total shots while both teams tallied 24 ground balls.

CMU had a slight 17-15 advantage in draw controls as Kenzie Streby registered a career-high seven.

Both teams were able to score seven free position shot goals during a physical game that saw nine yellow and 15 green cards distributed.

The Mavericks will continue their season next weekend with road games at CSU Pueblo on Friday (Mar. 27) and at Fort Lewis next Sunday (Mar. 29).
