AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University No. 1 singles player
Henry Scheck won a set in what was his final career match in his home state, one of a few highlights of the day for the Maverick men's tennis team, which was overpowered by NCAA Division II power Azusa Pacific University, 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon here at the Cougars' Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Cougars, ranked 39
th in the latest set of ITA NCAA Division II National Rankings, released earlier on the Wednesday won for the ninth straight time and improved to 13-4. They also reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament last season.
The Mavericks fell to 5-12 and finished their annual spring break trip to Southern California with an 0-4 mark.
Scheck, a native of the Camarillo and one of four Mav seniors who prepped at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, battled in his top flight singles match against the nation's 19
th-ranked Soeren Grandke, who won his eighth straight match.
However, Grandke outlasted Scheck, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
No. 74 Joan Crespo was also victorious for the Cougars at No. 4 singles as the Cougars won the other five singles matches in straight sets although
Diogo Manzano and
Emil Hultman pushed their opponents to 7-5 second set margins in the second and third flights.
The Cougars also won both of the completed doubles matches by 6-3 and 6-4 margins in the top two flights.
However, CMU's
Luke Burriesci and
Jamison Pfingston, victorious in Tuesday's dual against Menlo College, were leading their No. 3 doubles match against Crespo and Christopher Marci, 5-3 when it was left unfinished after the Cougars clinched the doubles point.
The No. 1 doubles affair was a match-up of two nationally-ranked squads with Grandke and Pinoit, ranked 23
rd in Wednesday's ITA rankings, claiming a 6-3 win over Scheck and
William Leschig, who moved up a spot to 13
th in the latest rankings.
The Mavericks will now return home for a brief respite before hitting the road once again on Mar. 27 and 28 to face NCAA Division III opponents University of the Ozarks (Ark.) and Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
