LA MIRADA, Calif.— Seniors
Henry Scheck and
Emil Hultman both recorded 3-set wins to lead a valiant fight from the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team in a 5-2 loss to Biola University, ranked 25
th in the country, on Monday afternoon here at the Biola Tennis Center.
Scheck won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 over Angel Guerrero Melgar at No. 1 while Hultman came from a set down to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Juan Vallejo at No. 3.
Scheck's win snapped a 4-match slide in singles play and allowed him to reach double-figures for wins with ten.
Hultman leads the Mavs with his 16-7 record.
However, The Eagles won the other four singles matches in straight sets after winning the two completed doubles matches. They improved to 11-1 overall as a team and are now 9-0 against Division II opposition.
The Mavericks fell to 5-10 overall and have lost five straight.
Hultman and Scheck were both able to record wins over players ranked well above them in the ITA's NCAA Division II West Region Singles Rankings at the end of the fall season.
Guerrero Melgar was ranked second while Vallejo was ranked eight. Hultman was 19
th for the Mavs while Scheck was 20
th.
However, Alejandro Flores Monteverde, ranked third, and Thiago Canessa, ranked fifth, were both able to win at No. 2 and 4 singles. Keyon Gahvarehchi, ranked 13
th, in the region, also won at No. 5 singles.
The Mavs will continue their 4-day trip in Southern California on Tuesday when they head to nearby Azusa to face the Menlo College Oaks in a neutral-site match at Azusa Pacific University's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
That match will begin at 9:30 a.m. PDT (10:30 a.m. Mountain).
The Mavs will then take on the host APU Cougars on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. PDT (2:30 p.m. Mountain), a time that was moved up 30 minutes from the originally scheduled time.
