Mavs fall 5-2 in California opener

Leschig/Scheck win national ranking clash

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team won both of the completed doubles matches and picked up a No. 4 singles win from William Leschig but could not pull off a road result falling 5-2 to the Westmont College Warriors on Sunday afternoon in their first of four matches over four days in California here at the Abbott Tennis Courts.

The Warriors are now 7-6 while the Mavericks fell to 5-9.

Leschig, who also teamed with Henry Scheck for 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, has now won seven his last eight singles matches.  He and Scheck have now won three of their last four doubles affairs and are ranked 14th in the ITA's NCAA Division II Doubles Rankings.

On Sunday, they got past  JD Drake and Driss Sedrati, ranked 42nd nationally, in the top flight to clinch the doubles point.

That came after the Mavs' Emil Hultman and Diogo Manzano won by a 6-3 margin over Diego De Cooman and Rafael Matias at No. 2 doubles.

The other doubles match was left unfinished.

The Warriors then rallied in singles winning four matches in straight sets and another by retirement as Scheck was unable to finish his No. 1 singles match against Diego De Cooman.
Meanwhile, Leschig won his singles match against Antoine De Cooman, 6-3, 6-4.

The Mavericks will play at 25th-ranked Biola in La Mirada on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. PDT (3 p.m. Mountain).  A live stream of that dual can be found hereLive results can be accessed here.
