SERIES HISTORY WITH UTAH VALLEY
Colorado Mesa is 4-0 against Utah Valley with that series coming in the Wolverines first year of Division I back in 2004 at Suplizio Field. The average margin of victory in the series was 13.3 for Colorado Mesa.
The Mavericks last Division I opponent they played was Northern Colorado back in 2016 when they won the two game series by scores of 7-4 and 13-4.
Utah Valley is the closest four-year, non-conference opponent for Colorado Mesa with a driving distance of 246 miles. BYU and Utah are the next two closest with their closest Division II opponent being West Texas A&M at 579 miles.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
The Wolverines are off to a 9-7 start on the season and are in the middle of a 12-game homestand at UCCU Ballpark. They are coming off a 4-1 weekend against Northern Colorado which closed on Monday.
Chipper Beck leads UVU in hitting with a .375 average. The Highland, Utah native had back-to-back four hit weekends in three game set with UC Riverside and Nevada.
The Mavericks likely wont see the rotation arms of UVU but could see Bradley Gilbert start for the Wolverines. Gilbert is the long reliever for UVU with a 1-1 record and a 1.32 ERA. He has four appearances with 13.2 innings pitched and 20 strikeouts.
ALOHA E KOMO MAI
Senior shortstop Kennedy Hara was a menace for the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys last weekend at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.Â
The Aiea, Hawaii native batted .615 (8-for-13) for the series with Highlands. He had a double, a home run, four runs scored and five runs driven. His OPS was north of 1.500 and had a walk-off single in the series finale on Sunday.Â
For the season, Hara is hitting .339 with four doubles and two homeruns. He has driven in 19 and is second on the team with 21 runs scored.Â
ANCHORING FIRST BASE
One of the biggest questions entering the season was going to be who takes over for Stevenson Reynolds at first base. Transfer Landon Nunes has been the answer and he has done an outstanding job both defensively and offensively.Â
Nunes is second on the team in batting average at .369 with four doubles 10 RBIs, and 18 runs scored. The UC Riverside transfer has an OPS over .900 and is 4-for-5 stealing bases.
He is a part of a defense that is fielding .971 and has not made an error at first base.Â
THE FIRST 20
Through the first 20 games, Colorado Mesa is 18-2 and 4-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Since 2015, the Mavericks have not started the season better than 18-2 and have hit that mark three times prior to this year. The most recent occurred in 2021 when the losses came against Northwest Nazarene in the season opener and the final game of the series with UCCS.
THE STAFF
The Colorado Mesa pitching staff has been outstanding against one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division II thus far. The Mavericks have a 3.93 team ERA with a 2.74 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Opponents are hitting just .264 against them and have given up only nine home runs with 16 games coming at elevation in Grand Junction.
The three regular starters have ERA's that range from 3.50 to 4.50 with Cole Seward (0.00 ERA) slated to make his second start of the season in the weekend series with CSU Pueblo.Â
SEWIE'S BACK
As mentioned in the previous note, senior Cole Seward is scheduled to make his second start of the season in the series against CSU Pueblo over the weekend in the Steel City. Seward came back from injury two weeks ago and is still working back from his injury.Â
Seward has made two appearances so far this year and still has yet to surrender an earned run in six innings pitcher. The 2024 All-Region pitcher has allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six with opposing batters hitting just .190 off of him.Â
