Mav men split Friday duals

CMU falls to WNMU, 4-2 before bouncing back for 4-1 win over OUAZ

SURPRISE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team salvaged a Friday split claiming a 4-1 road evening win over NAIA Ottawa University of Arizona here at the Surprise Tennis Center after dropping a tight 4-2 decision to fellow NCAA Division II South Central Region foe Western New Mexico University at the nearby Paseo Raquet Club in Glendale during the afternoon.

The split left the Mavs with a 2-5 overall record.

Six different Mavericks won at least one match throughout the day.

Western New Mexico Recap

The Mustangs, who improved to 4-1 with their second straight team win, jumped out to a 3-0 lead as they won two of the three doubles matches before getting straight set singles wins at No. 6 and 2.

However, the Mavericks answered back with singles wins from Henry Scheck and Emil Hultman in the first and third flights.

The Mustangs then stopped the comeback with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles preventing Gavin Hutter's 6-4, 2-1 lead at No. 5 singles irrelevant to the overall dual as that match went unfinished.

Scheck, who had teamed with William Leschig for a 7-5 win over Mael Houee and Jack Semper at No. 1 doubles during the first wave, was then able to deliver a 6-3, 6-1 win over Houee in the top singles flight.  The Maverick senior out of Camarillo, California has now won four of his last five singles matches.

Meanwhile, Hultman also won 6-3, 7-5 win over Yannik Orgulski at No. 3 singles.

OUAZ Recap

The Mavericks also dropped the doubles point against the now 1-9 Spirit although Hultman and Diogo Manzano were 6-3 winners over Kasper Olofsson and Fabian Wetter at No. 2 doubles.

However, the Mavericks dominated in singles, winning in each of the four bottom flights while taking the first sets at both No. 1 and 2.

Luke Burriesci picked up the Mavs' first win, cruising past Ablin By, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Hultman then finished off Olofsson, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 before Leschig claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Boston McFarland at No. 4.

Hutter then completed the dual with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Max Lopez-Gonzalez at No. 5.

Scheck was also on the verge of winning his top flight match and was leading Arvid Lindblad, 6-3, 5-3 while Manzano was also up a set but trailing 4-3 in the second to Filip Novacek at No. 2 singles.
