Mavs split two in Kearney

Scheck, Hultman both go 4-0

KEARNEY, Neb.— Henry Scheck and Emil Hultman went a combined 4-0 as the lead the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team to its first team win of the season as part of a Friday split here at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
 
The Mavericks, now 1-3 overall, dominated Hastings, 7-0 in the afternoon before dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker to Northwest Missouri State in the nightcap, which went deep into the night.
 
The Mavs lost just eight total games and won all six singles matches in straight sets against the Hastings Broncos, who fell to 0-3.  The Mavs also swept the doubles matches as Scheck and William Leschig won 6-1 in the top flight while Hultman and Diogo Manzano won by the same scoreline at No. 2.
 
In singles, Scheck won 6-2, 6-1 over Joel Carter on Court 1 while Manzano and Hultman both won their matches in dominant 6-0, 6-0 fashion at No. 2 and 3, respectively. 
 
Gavin Hutter also won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles while Leschig won the second set of his No. 4 singles match over Ehtan Mins, 6-0 after taking the first set, 6-2. 
 
Luke Burriesci also won at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-3 after teaming with Andrew Lock for a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
 
Against Northwest Missouri State (1-1), the Mavs' first NCAA Division II foe of the season, the Mavericks won the doubles point as Scheck and Leschig saved three match points in a 7-5 win over Gage Foltz and Domnik Wijntjes in the top flight.  Hultman and Manzano had earlier won a 6-3 match at No. 2 doubles.
 
Play was even tighter in singles as each of the first four matches went to third-set tiebreakers, which the teams split evenly.  However, the Bearcats picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 5 singles to clinch the dual after also winning at No. 6 singles.
 
Scheck came from behind to win his top flight match over Wijntjes, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) while Hultman claimed a  6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (11-9) thriller over Bernardo Henriques, ranked seventh in the ITA's Central Regional, at No. 3 singles, which gave the Mavs a 3-1 overall lead.
 
However, Konstantin Feiel came from a set down to win over Leschig, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 4 singles after Pavlo Vysotin, ranked tenth in the Central Region, squeaked past Manzano, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) in the first completed singles match at No. 2.
 
The Mavericks will wrap up their weekend on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CDT (8 a.m. Mountain) taking on the host Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
