GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team dominated from start to finish this evening as they scored a season-high 100 points in a decisive 100-76 conference victory over the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks at Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks, who improved to 16-7, 12-3 RMAC, claimed their sixth straight win with the decision as they handed Fort Lewis their third straight loss, dropping them to 14-8, 11-3 RMAC. Prior to these three straight losses they won their first 11 conference games.
Colorado Mesa is now 9-1 at home this season as well.
With the win, the Mavs forged a 3-way tie for first place in the RMAC standings between both teams and Black Hills State, who defeated Colorado School of Mines at home in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Each school is now 12-3 in RMAC play with just five conference games remaining.
Tonight's 100-point scoring effort was the Mavs' first time reaching the century mark since Feb. 27, 2024, when CMU scored 105 points at Westminster. In addition, they matched a school record tonight by making 18 3-pointers (Feb. 16, 2024 vs. #21 Colorado School of Mines) and shooting 60.0 percent (18-30) from beyond the arc.
This was their first time reaching the 100-point mark at home since Jan. 25, 2022 (101 vs. Colorado Christian).
Their high-scoring affair was fueled by a dominant start in the first half that saw the Mavs go up 21-12 upon hitting the under 12-minute media timeout mark.
The Skyhawks momentarily brought it back to within four points just after 10 minutes of play but a strong 15-3 run allowed Colorado Mesa to regain control of the game with them eventually heading into half leading 47-29 for an 18-point advantage.
In the first half alone, the Mavs were 8-for-14 from three-point land with two players already in double figure scoring.
The teams both traded buckets for the first five minutes of the second half before Colorado Mesa went on a tear the rest of the game collecting runs of 10-2 and 11-4 while leading by 20 points or more for the final 13 minutes.
They led by as many as 30 points in the game while never trailing.
Ty Allred and Ben Henderson combined for 48 points, 14 assists and 13 rebounds to lead five Mavs in double figures.
Allred scored 25 points and had a career-high six assists while going 5-for-10 from 3-point land. He also had six rebounds and added three blocked shots and a steal on the defensive end.
Henderson's 23 points were a season-high with him finishing 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 on three-pointers.
Cohenj Gonzales had 16 points while Harvey White and Jaylen Pitman both added ten points. White also had five assists and three blocked shots.
Fort Lewis' Jaxon Smith scored 21 points for Skyhawks with Chuol Deng adding 16 points and seven rebounds.
Fort Lewis was held to a 41.3 percent (26-63) shooting effort.
Colorado Mesa held the advantage in all three major shooting categories while dominating defensively with 10 blocks and out-stealing the Skyhawks 9-8.
Fort Lewis came into the game with the most steals in the conference and being ranked top five in the nation.
Head Coach Mike Dunlap commented on the defensive emphasis saying, "Fort Lewis tries to speed you up so a lot of credit to them, but we didn't allow them to do that, and we were able to stymie them at times which allowed for a good result. It's a very sweet win but we have two games this week and play again on Saturday, so we'll enjoy this one for about an hour."
The Mavs will return to the hardwood this Saturday as they host New Mexico Highlands University at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at cmumavericks.com/tickets or in person at the gate.
