Scoville begins 'dream' and professional volleyball career

Former Maverick standout seizes late professional opportunity in Kosovo

Former Colorado Mesa University volleyball standout Sadie Scoville has recently begun her professional career, signing with and playing for KV Fer Volley in the European nation of Kosovo.

A 4-time overall All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pick, who recorded 1,103 kills in her four collegiate seasons at CMU and previously at CSU Pueblo, Scoville had a last-minute opportunity to fulfill her dreams of playing professionally in Europe.

She is playing in the city of Ferizaj— with over 109,000 residents— is the third largest in the nation.  The city is located in the south-eastern portion of the country about halfway between the Kosovoan capital of Pristina and the North Macedonia capital city of Skopje.

She is playing alongside former CSU Pueblo teammate Taylor Cary, who also had a last minute deal to play with one of the top teams in the Kosovoan Women's Super League and helped initiate Scoville's opportunity.

"My first reaction was shocked and so scared," Scoville said when asked about the opportunity, which came just 48 hours before she left her home in Utah.

"I couldn't believe that the opportunity had finally come.  But once I had more time to come to terms with it, I was so excited and grateful, because this is my dream!."

"This was extremely last minute.  I was fully prepared to stay at home in Utah for the fall and start with a team beginning in December or January, but my teammate Taylor (Cary) came here before me and spoke very highly of it, so I reconsidered and thought about it more.  The coach then reached back to me with some changes in my contract and I said yes on a Monday and fell out on a Wednesday.

"It was so hard to say goodbye to my family and not being able to prepare for a change as big as this.  But in some ways, ripping the band-aid off had its benefits too," Scoville added.

Her original contract is for 2 ½ months, but Scoville noted it can be extended to April.

In addition to the league matches, the Volleyball Federation of Kosovo conducts the Kosovo Cup and Super Cup and qualifies teams to European Club competitions.  Earlier in 2026, KV Ver Folley played in the CEV Women's Challenge Cup with matches in both Ferizaj and in Switzerland.

Her squad is currently 1-1 and sits in third place of the 8-team league after falling in five sets to KV AAB Prishtina 75 in Scoville's first match last Thursday (Oct. 8) before claiming a 3-0 win over KV Prishtina Elite on Saturday (Oct. 10).

Scoville earned First Team All-RMAC honors and led the CMU Mavericks to a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2025, putting down 342 kills.  Previously, she had spent three years at CSU Pueblo, playing for now second-year CMU Coach Austin Albers, who guided the ThunderWolves for six seasons from 2019-24.

"It has been awesome to play with Taylor (Cary) again," Scoville said about her opportunity to reunite with her former Pack teammate.

"This was also last minute for her.  Her agent was the one who found this team and afterwards, the coach asked if she knew of any outside hitters that needed a spot.  She (Cary) forwarded my number to the coach and the rest is history," Scoville said about the process.

"Taylor arrived earlier than I did so she got to experience the city, the team and the players before I did.  I was still very uncertain but she did a great job of convincing me to come."

"Life for the first few days has been very overwhelming, in both positive and negative ways. I'm so grateful and excited to have this opportunity, to be able to live in another country and gain new experiences that are so different than what I'm used to. On the other hand, it's been a huge adjustment: the time zone, the language, food, transportation, simplicities that I'm used to in America - it's all completely new to me. Adjusting to that has taken some time, for sure."

Although she had never been to Kosovo, Scoville was a part of the CMU team's European tour in the summer of 2025 that took the Mavs to Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.

"This situation is hard and it's new, but with time, the adjustment comes along and you settle in. So in a way, that experience prepared me and taught me what to expect as a volleyball player in Europe," she said about how her experience with CMU prepared her for her new phase of life.

"My time as a college athlete in general prepared me for this experience. It is not easy to be a student-athlete and the grind is real. So just living my time as a college athlete has prepared me immensely for being a pro athlete. You are forced to be mentally tough and forced to adapt to a difficult situation," Scoville added.

Overall, Scoville is ready for everything that comes with her new life.

"Outside of volleyball, I hope to learn more of the local language, travel to an Albanian beach, make new friends and fully immerse myself into life here. I want to enjoy myself and make the most of this special time here in Kosovo."
