GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team overcame a slow start to pick up a 70-41 win over the Chadron State Eagles on a special Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon in Brownson Arena.
Olivia Reed Thyne's free-throw with 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter gave her the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference all-time scoring record. She raised her career total to 2,003 at that point breaking the 24-year old record of 2,002 that had stood since 2002 (New Mexico Highlands' Becky Gonzalez). The Mavs then called timeout and recognized her. Reed Thyne then added seven more points down the stretch.
She finished the afternoon with 23 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. The total puts her at 2,010 points in her career.
To break the record against Chadron State was a little extra special for Reed Thyne. She spent the first two years of her prep career in Chadron, Nebraska, where her father Houston Reed was the Head Men's Coach at Chadron State at the time.
Colorado Mesa started off slow which triggered Coach Wagner to use a majority of his bench for the two middle quarters of the game.
Sedonia Isenbart,
Devin Miller,
Brooke Mansanares,
Evan Hamey and
Joslyn Spires played a majority of the second quarter and even started the second half.
Sedonia Isenbart finished the game with a career-high nine points and career-high 13 minutes while
Devin Miller had a season-high six rebounds.
Mason Rowland had 13 points, five assists and three steals while
Hallie Clark was also in double-figures with ten points.
Colorado Mesa never trailed in Saturday's game and finished with 49-27 (+22) rebounding advantage while shooting 42.9 percent from the field. Despite a sub-par game on the defensive end early on, they were able to limit the Eagles to 29.1 percent from the field and force 19 turnovers.
Chadron State's Ella Moser led the Eagles with 15 points off the bench.
The Mavericks won their 17
th straight game and improved to 20-1 on the season. They are now 10-0 in the conference and have now won 20 games or more under head coach
Taylor Wagner for the 10
th time.
The Mavericks are back in Brownson Arena for the annual Blizzard in Brownson game on Thursday. They will take on CSU Pueblo in that game before a showdown on Saturday against UCCS.
