GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team earned a hard fought 62-49 win over the Black Hills State Yellowjackets on Thursday (Jan. 22) evening in Brownson Arena. The win extended the Mavericks winning streak to 16 games while snapping Black Hills State's nine-game winning streak.
After playing to a 32-27 halftime score, the Mavericks used a 10-0 run to begin the third quarter of action to extend their lead to 15 points at 42-27 after
Olivia Reed Thyne's converted and-1 with 6:22 to play in the frame.
The Mavericks wound up shooting 60.0 percent in their 23-point third quarter but finished with just two fourth quarter field goals and a 15.4 percent effort in the final quarter.
The Colorado Mesa defense limited the Yellowjackets to 31.7 percent (20-63) shooting and to just three 3-pointers on 20 attempts (15 percent) despite being outrebounded 49-36.
Olivia Reed Thyne had a game-high 15 points to lead the Maverick offense. She also had nine rebounds. Reed Thyne now has 1,987 career points and is 13 away from 2,000 and 15 away from the RMAC record.
Mason Rowland recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in support. The double-double was her fifth of the season.
The win improved Colorado Mesa to 19-1 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellowjackets came into the contest just one game back of the Mavericks but will leave Grand Junction with a 7-2 record in the conference.
Black Hills State was led by Bradie Schlabs had 13 points to lead the 'Jackets. Audrey Norville added nine points and eight rebounds while Maureen Ulrich had six points and nine rebounds before fouling out.
Colorado Mesa has now won 26 consecutive RMAC contests over the past two seasons and are now 6-0 at home this season.
The Mavericks continue their home stand on Saturday when they host Chadron State at 1pm in Brownson Arena.
