GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team dropped their first home contest of the season this evening as they fell to a sharp-shooting No. 21 Black Hills State University squad by a score of 85-63 at Brownson Arena.
The two teams came into the night tied for second place in the RMAC standings with the Mavs now sitting at 10-7 (6-3 RMAC) and the Yellow Jackets improving to 14-3 (7-2 RMAC).
The Mavs are now 5-1 at home with this being their first time losing at Brownson Arena since last season.
The visiting Yellow Jackets matched a school-record by hitting 19 3-pointers and shot 50.0 percent (19-38) from long distance. Over half of the team's shots came from beyond the arc.
The Mavericks made two 3-pointers on nine attempts (22.2 percent) while shooting 40.4 percent total. Colorado Mesa won the battle in the paint as they outscored the Yellow Jackets 28-18 underneath.
Both teams had a tighter battle in the first half with the Yellow Jackets leading by just eight points at halftime before breaking away in the final 20 minutes.
Clayton Jewell recorded his fourth straight double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds, six of which were offensive.
In addition, this marks his eighth straight game scoring in double figures as well.
Ty Allred (14 points) and Harvey White (13) were also in double figures for the Mavs.
The Mavs finished with a 40-29 (+11) rebounding advantage. Wes Ball added eight rebounds off the bench while Kap Laila also had seven to aid the boarding efforts.
Cam Lowe canned seven triples on ten attempts and scored a game and career-high 31 points for BHSU. He was 12-for-15 from the field.
Four other 'Jackets were also in double-figures as six different Yellow Jackets made a 3-point shot.
