COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
Sophia Cornish was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Cornish,
tabbed tenth at 117 pounds in the latest (Friday, Jan. 16) National Wrestling Coaches Association's NCAA Women's Rankings, pinned eighth-ranked Leiannah Landreth of Fort Hays State to help lift the seventh-ranked Mavericks to a 24-21 dual win over the No. 11 Tigers on Sunday in Hays, Kansas.
That win was part of her 4-1 weekend, which also saw her place second at Saturday's York Open in York, Nebraska before picking up a win by forfeit against Sioux Falls in the first leg of Sunday's tri-dual.
At York, Cornish beat teammate Isabella Morales in the quarterfinals before recording a 10-0 technical fall win over Missouri Valley's Sarah Pineda. Cornish, who is now 20-9 on the season, suffered her only loss to Grand View's Mayangelie Colon, ranked fourth in the NAIA.
A native of Mission Viejo, California, Cornish is the fourth Maverick to earn the RMAC weekly honor this season, joining
Jayleen Sekona (Nov. 4),
Mia Zuniga (Dec. 22) and
Lorianna Piestewa, who won last week's honor.
The Mavericks will contest a single RMAC dual this weekend, traveling to Alamosa to face Adams State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
