Mavs fall in overtime thriller to Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team suffered a tight 102-98 overtime defeat this afternoon as they fell to the Adams State University Grizzlies in Plachy Hall.

The Mavericks drop their first game of the new year with the loss as this was the only time they have played in overtime this season. The last time they played an overtime game was against MSU Denver on Feb. 6 last year.

CMU moves to 8-6 overall while still being tied for third place in the RMAC standings at 4-2. Adams State moves to 8-6 overall as well with now a 3-3 RMAC record.

Colorado Mesa began the game on an 8-0 run to jump out to the early advantage with them leading for roughly the first 14 minutes of the contest before Adams State was able to take over late into the half.

The Mavs led by as many as 10 points during that stretch with them reaching that mark just over 10 minutes into play.

The Grizzlies brought the game back to within five or less points the between the 10th and 14th minutes before taking the lead for the remainder of the first half.

Adams State used hot three-point shooting going 9-for-19 in the opening 20 minutes to bolster their attack which saw them lead 48-43 going into halftime.

Colorado Mesa dominated the paint instead with 28 points compared to the Grizzlies' 10.

Through almost the entirety of the second half the Grizzlies maintained their lead as they led by single-digits up until the final 30 seconds when Colorado Mesa finally was able to tie the game up on a Ty Allred mid-range shot.

Prior to the final 30 seconds the Mavs brought the game to within two points twice before with Allred's shot finally tying the game up once again.

Adams State had a chance to win the game in the final 15 seconds of regulation, but strong CMU defense prevented a shot before the buzzer.

The overtime period featured the lead shift back-and-forth four times with 14 total combined points being managed.

The eventual game deciding shot came as a shot-clock buzzer beater three pointer from ASU's Dillan Baker who gave his team the three-point lead with 20 second left to play.

The Grizzlies added one more point on an intentional foul free throw in the ninth second before Colorado Mesa ran out of time in their attempt to come back.

The Mavs' 98 points were a new season-high as they shot 52.1 percent from the field in the loss while grabbing 48 rebounds.

Adams State shot only 42 percent from the field but made a staggering 17 three pointers. They would also only commit nine turnovers compared to the Mavs' 16.

Clayton Jewell collected his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds while the three others of Ty Allred (17 points), Cohenj Gonzales (17 points) and Ben Henderson (14 points) all scored in double figures.

Wes Ball had nine points and nine rebounds off the bench to nearly record a double-double as well.

The Mavs will have a quick turnaround this next week as they play this coming Tuesday and Thursday now with them taking to Gunnison on Tuesday to play the Mountaineers of Western Colorado before returning home on Thursday to host Westminster.
