Mavs conclude opening weekend with emphatic 5-0 victory over Comets

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Playing a tight 75 minutes to open their day, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team came alive in the final 15 minutes of the second half against UT Dallas today as they scored five straight goals en route to a 5-0 win at Community Hospital Unity Field.

Leading the charge of Mavericks to dominate the net was freshman Kamden Kooiman who recorded two of the goals, including the first of his collegiate career. Joining him in the scoring collum includes Joao Pedro Moraes, Nathan Hernandez and Dylan Hobson with each of them totaling one goal apiece.

Prior to the final 20 minutes both teams played a fairly even match with neither team being able to break the seal. During that stretch the Comets were able to outshoot the Mavs 13-6 but couldn't convert with only two of the shots being on goal. It was then at the 75th minute mark that the game changed for good with the Mavs beginning their onslaught.

Starting the scoring spurt was Pedro Moraes as he struck first with him scoring unassisted. In his goal he recovered a kick out from a Comet defender before hammering it into the right side of the net to give the Mavs their first lead of the season.

Following then shortly after in the 77th minute was the newcomer Kooiman who scored from a long pass down field by Kensho Negi, with him knocking in the goal from short range on the left side of the net.

Less than a minute later the scoring continued again with Hernandez scoring this time as he flicked in the third goal of the game. In his goal he was assisted by Manuel Ponce Casas and Matteo Bonelli as each used nifty passes to help the Mavs grow their lead.

Kooiman struck once more in the 87th minute to grow the lead to four with his second goal of the day, with this time being assisted by Hernandez.

Concluding the game's scoring was Hobson with him adding the final goal in the 89th minute on a free kick opportunity from just outside the penalty area. Hobson launched the ball to the up left of the net in his attempt to seal the deal with less than a minute left of play.

In the net, goalkeeper Nathan Beck recorded his first career shutout with the win as he collected five saves while facing 16 shots. Four of those five saves came in the second half.

In total there was 31 shots combined in the game with the Mavs having 15 of them and totaling nine of them on goal.

The Mavs will now head to Idaho this next weekend as they travel to Nampa to take on both Western Oregon University and Northwest Nazarene University.
