The ladies faced their best regular season competition in their only non-conference matchup of the fall. CMU traveled to familiar foe Colorado School of Mines and Golden, Colorado for a showdown. Unfortunately, CMU started out flat, after Mines initially knocked on the opening kickoff. CMU then lost the first scrum of the match and that turned into a costly 7-0 mistake under 2 minutes into the matchup. CMU would bounce back with a slick breakaway try by co-captain Ellen Rickerd, to close the gap to 7-5. Rookie Bentley Steyaert was next to touch down to give the Mavs the first lead of the match 12-7 halfway into the first half with a gritty hard-fought pick and go.
Â
Mines was not done, and they fought back and capitalized on the many CMU turnovers to run the pitch and win the lead back. 14-12 for the second lead change of the match. CMU bounced back yet again with sophomore speedster entering the match on a big kick, chase, and out run on the outside, from
Chloe Coop. This score brought the Mavs back on top going into halftime with the lead 19-14.
Â
CMU suffered a few injuries and made some halftime adjustments. Mines again came out of the break on fire. Regaining the lead just 8 minutes into the second half. It would stay 21-19 for almost 20 more minutes before the wheels came off for CMU while Mines stayed sharp. Lack of ball control, turnovers, and penalties was the demise of the visiting team. Mavs drop this non conference matchup 33-19.
