RAPID CITY, S.D. – Closing out the nonconference portion of their schedule, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team suffered a tough 4-0 defeat this afternoon as they dropped a road match to South Dakota Mines at Dakota Fields.
Playing a pair of conference opponents this week in nonconference matchups, the Mavericks closed out their first portion of the season with the loss as they now sit at an even 3-3-1. South Dakota Mines moved their record to 5-0-2 with the win.
This was just the second time this year the Mavs have been shutout with them outscoring opponents 18-10 coming into the contest.
All four goals of the game were scored in the second half with the first 45 minutes remaining scoreless after the Mavs outshot the Hardrockers 6-1. The second half featured a different story as the Colorado Mesa was then outshot 13-5 in the final 45 minutes with South Dakota Mines also having seven corner kicks in that stretch.
Four different players scored those goals for the Hardrockers with three of them coming in the span of 10 minutes between the 50th and 58th minutes. They added their fourth goal in the 80th minute.
Daniel Paulsson and Cain Castellon led the Mavs with two shots each with both of Paulsson's being on goal. Nathan Beck recorded two saves in the net while facing 14 shots.
Opening up conference play this next weekend, the Mavs will now head to Southern Colorado this next Thursday through Sunday as they take on both UCCS and CSU Pueblo.
