COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Facing the first of their two foes in Southern Colorado, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team suffered a narrow defeat this evening as they were taken down by a score of 2-1 against UCCS at Mountain Lion Field.
In the opening of conference play the Mavericks are now 3-4-1 on the season while starting 0-1 in RMAC play. The Mountain Lions moved to an even 3-3-3 (1-0 RMAC) with the win.
Scoring the lone goal for Colorado Mesa was Cain Castellon with the Sophomore nabbing his first career goal with the Mavs.
Looking at what was almost a scoreless first half, the Mountain Lions scored with just five minutes left to play in the opening 45 minutes as they came around in the 40th to score the opening goal. Mile Semanario tacked on that goal for UCCS after performing a spin move in the penalty area and shooting to the top left corner.
The teams both went into halftime with UCCS outshooting Colorado Mesa 12-4 and owning the corner kick advantage at 3-1.
The game stayed in the Mountain Lions' favor for much of the second half but finally saw change in the 75th minute with Castellon coming around for the Mavs to score.
Castellon's score came after receiving a cross pass from the other side of the penalty area to which he shot with the ball being saved by the goalkeeper before being bounced back to Castellon again and him shooting into the net this time.
While Castellon's goal evened the match up and seemed to change the momentum, UCCS struck right back in the 77th minute with them scoring on a two-on-two opportunity by Nick Walker.
Colorado Mesa pressed hard in the final minutes to even up the match tacking on four shots but were unsuccessful in the attempts as the game ended in the Mountain Lions favor.
While the Mavs were outshot at half, they ended the game differently outshooting the Mountain Lions 17-16 with five shots on goal. They also finished with eight corner kicks compared to UCCS's five.
Beyond Castellon's goal the Mavs were led by Daniel Paulsson and Nathan Hernandez with each of them totaling four shots apiece. Castellon had three himself. Nathan Beck totaled three saves in the net.
Continuing their weekend on the road the Mavs now head just a tad bit further south on Sunday when they take on CSU Pueblo at Art & Lorraine Gonzalez Stadium at 1 P.M.
