GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Scoring her conference co-leading sixth goal this season, Kylie Wells helped lift the #20 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team to their fourth straight home win tonight as the Mavericks narrowly defeated the Cougars of Colorado Christian University 1-0 at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Colorado Mesa, who now sits at 5-2 on the season, begins conference play 1-0 following the win while the Cougars drop to 1-4-1. This was the Mavs' seventh straight time beating CCU.
Wells' 74th minute goal proved to be just enough offense in the matchup as the Mavs dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Cougars 25-1 but couldn't seem to get anything to drop in the early goings. They recorded seven of those shots on goal with the only shot by the Cougars being on goal as well but saved by Keely Wieczorek.
Prior to the 74th minute the Mavs had taken 21 shots in the game, including 14 at half. The Cougars were held shotless at half with their only opportunity of the day being in the 63rd minute on a free kick chance from just outside the penalty area.
While the chances of a draw seemed to be looming closer as the time ran out, Wells came around finally in the 74th minute with her scoring from five yards out after receiving a nice cross pass from Olivia Barrett.
Barrett is now the only Maverick to own more than one assist this season with her sitting at two. Wells continues to raise her team-goal lead at six now as she has scored a goal in every home game this season.
Wells took just two shots in the game with eight different Mavs recording two or more shots. Parker Mairs leads that group finishing with a staggering six shots in the win.
Keely Wieczorek recorded just the one save in the game but in doing so recorded another shutout this season. Wieczorek has yet to allow a goal at home this year while raising her career-shutout record to 24 games.
Looking to build on their two-game winning streak, the Mavs now host MSU Denver this Sunday as they face off for a 1 P.M. start. Tickets can be purchased online at cmumavericks.com or in-person at the gate.
