GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Starting a perfect 2-0 to begin conference play and improving their win streak to three, the #20 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team defeated MSU Denver this afternoon in 2-0 victory at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Taking down both schools from the Mile High City this weekend, the Mavericks defeated Colorado Christian University on Friday night 1-0, before their win today. They now sit at 6-2 overall while being tied for first in the conference at 2-0. MSU Denver stays winless with the loss as they now move to 0-4-4 (0-1-1 RMAC).
Prior to the game's eventual win for the Mavs there was a 30-minute rain delay that occurred just two minutes into the contest. Game time officially resumed close to 2 P.M. after storms cleared the area with the total time of today's event being roughly three hours.
Doing the scoring for Colorado Mesa was the duo of Olivia Barrett and Kylie Wells with each of them tacking on one goal apiece. Both were key in the win against CCU as well, with Wells scoring the goal in that game and being assisted by Barrett.
In addition to the hot offense that the Mavs have possessed lately, they also recorded their fifth shutout of the season with the win. In total the Mavs outshot the Roadrunners 16-4 in the game with Colorado Mesa also having 11 corner kicks compared to the Roadrunners' zero.
Barrett scored the Mavs' game-winning goal in the 33rd minute after heading in a high pass from near the sideline by Kylie Wells. This was Barret's first goal of the season with Wells adding the assist. Earlier in the contest the two looked to have had a flipped flopped result with Wells scoring on a Barrett assist but ultimately the goal was called offsides.
The score sat at 1-0 at half but seemed larger as the Mavs had already recorded 11 shots to that point with MSU Denver only owning one.
After getting her goal earlier in the game called off, Wells did come around to score for sure this time with her adding another goal in the 56th minute. Wells was able to dance around a defender in her score before finding the bottom left corner of the net past a diving goalkeeper. With the goal Wells continues her streak of scoring in every home game this season and sits at seven total to lead the conference.
Making three saves in the net and continuing to bolster the Mavs' defense was Keely Wieczorek with the junior now owning 25 career shutouts.
Continuing action in RMAC play, Colorado Mesa plays a split format this next week as they take to the road for a Friday matchup with Fort Lewis College in Durango before returning home on Sunday to host Western Colorado University for Senior Day.
