Mavs make the long haul to Pocatello

The long haul to Pocatello, ID provided the Mavericks with another opportunity to showcase their perseverance and continued with the "chipping away" mentality that as already returned dividends on the season.  9 individual Mavericks qualified into the finals, and while only three managed to get points in the first round (none higher than the 4th) the Mavericks still ended up the reserve women's team champs on the weekend.

Although she failed to make it back in here signature event of goat tying, Justise Jones is laying the framework for her All-Around bid in the 25-26 season.  Scraping into the short round at the 10th call position in the breakaway roping consistency proved to be the key element for her success in Idaho, as her pair of matching 3.4 second runs ended garnered her third in the round and third in the Average, which catapults her to the number two spot in the region, only 5 points back of the leader, but more importantly gives her 150 points in the event; the magic number that must be reached for a contestant's second event to count for All-Around ranking and qualifications.

Barrel Racing this week came with its challenges in Pocatello's large outdoor arena set up.  Last year's regional champion and sophomore transfer Jessy Pelloni of Meeker, Colorado bounced back from the mud trip at SUU last week to place fourth in the first round, and then shaved two tenths of her first round time, but unfortunately a brush of the first barrel caused a slow motion tip that left her with a penalty, and kept her out of placing in the short round and average.  Kailyn Beauvais joined her sophomore teammate in the short round after placing 6 but also suffered the consequences of a downed barrel.

Team Ropers were a hot ticket for the Mavericks as Freshmen Cole Luttrell and Dylan Norby teamed up to make the short round in the number 9 spot and used it to their advantage by making another solid run and earning points for a 4th place round finish that took them to 5th in the average after multiple other no times.  10th high call belonged to returning Senior Ralson Descheny of Round Rock, Arizona with his partner from Snow College.  The team put two great runs together in the field, but were stymied by bad luck, specifically Descheny's thumb getting caught in the dally, which caused a dropped rope and a short round no time.

Goat tying as always was a Maverick positive, as Mckenzie Crockett and Kylie Ann Behrendt have now gone 2-2 in career short round qualifications.  Crocket earned the third high call spot, and while she didn't have the run she'd hoped for in the short go, still ended up earning average points, which now sits the Idaho Freshmen just outside the top 10 in the regional standings.  The highlight of the night and the rodeo's 120 foot score came from the smallest Maverick, KylieAnn Behrendt and her trusty stead Little Man. The goats were particularly wild at this event, resulting in a near 50% DQ rate amongst contestants.  Behrendt maxed out her draw and made a solid 1st round read to land her 6th coming back to the short go and with a "nothing to lose and everything to gain" mentality the Nevada native went lights out to win the short go with a 7.3, and the pressure she put on the contestants ahead of her proved enough to bring home the coveted belt buckle, push her to the number one spot in the regional standings, and earn her an invitation to this year's TVE Sonny Sike's Pioneer Chute Out, where she would join the 3-time CNFR qualifier Jones as dual goat tyers representing CMU.
