After torrential rain and eminent lightning caused the first rodeo performance weather cancellation in almost 2 decades of Rocky Mountain Region Competition, the Mavericks pushed through the mud, (literally) to a great start of their 25-26 season.
The Goat tying proved again to be the Mavericks strongest event, with 5 of 10 short round qualifiers wearing the CMU Uniform, including Nevada Freshman
Kylie Ann Behrendt, who placed a team highest second in the average along with placing in both rounds for 140 points.
Morgan McGuire also made her freshmen debut worth points from the first round, while
Justise Jones of Canada looks to set the bar high for herself. Jones also placed in the both rounds of the goat tying as well as the average which is no surprise for the reigning regional reserve champion, but in a strong start to her season All-Around title aspirations, she also won the first round of the breakaway and gained points in the average there as well.
Two different Mavericks were within .1 of making the short round in the barrels but unfortunately weren't able to get over the cut line, but the team stayed strongly represented in the short round, with
Kailyn Beauvais of Alaska qualifying in to the short round of breakaway roping,
Ralson Descheny in the team roping, and
Cole Luttrell in the Tie Down. Luttrell, of Montrose, snuck into the short round in the 10
th and last slot, but made the most of the situation, tying his short round calf in 10.6 seconds to split the win in the round, and jump all the way to 4
th in the Average.
The Mavericks will be headed north next week for the Bengal Stampede in Pocatello, Idaho, hosted by last year's regional champions in both the Men's and Women's divisions, Idaho State University.
