Mavs overrun Grizzlies in 5-0 win

Bonelli records first career hat trick

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Earning their second straight victory and building on their offensive prowess they've possessed lately, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team unloaded for a 5-0 victory this afternoon as they defeated the Grizzlies of Adams State University at ASU Soccer Field.

Scoring nine goals now in their last two games, the Mavericks improve their season record to 3-2-1 with the win while Adams State falls to 1-4-1.

Proving to be a large part of the victory was Matteo Bonelli with sophomore recording his first collegiate hat trick in the win. Joining Bonelli in the scoring column was also the pair of Manuel Ponce Casas and Nathan Hernandez with each of them scoring one goal apiece.

Beyond the goals there were also three assists in the game with Bonelli and Ponce Casas each having one and Connor Chilson adding the third.

Starting the game quickly just a little over a minute in was Ponce Casas with the senior knocking in a goal on a deflected save by the goalkeeper for him to score in his second straight game.

The early lead was then added onto in the eighth minute with Bonelli coming around this time for the first of his three goals in the game. Bonelli scored his first goal on a set up pass from Ponce Casas to which he hammered in from inside the penalty area.

Following then in the 12th minute he added his second goal after a breakaway attempt for the Mavs led to Chilson flicking it across the middle to which Bonelli easily knocked in from close range.

The rest of the first half was kept quiet with no more goals coming until 42 minutes later in the second half.

Scoring that goal was Bonelli once again as he added his third score of the day in the 54th minute after shooting from just outside the penalty box and past a diving goalkeeper.

Leading 4-0, the Mavs added their fifth and final goal of the day in the 63rd minute with Hernandez being the scorer this time after using a brilliant pass from Bonelli to chip the ball in from less than five feet out.

In total the Mavs outshot the Grizzlies 16-8 in the contest with nine of their shots being on goal. They also dominated the corner kick attempts totaling nine compared to the Grizzlies' zero.

Nathan Beck earned his second shutout of the season with the win as he collected three saves in the net.

Staying on the road now for another game the Mavs head to South Dakota this Sunday when they take on South Dakota Mines for another nonconference matchup. Game time is set for 1 P.M. at Dakota Fields.
