CARSON, Calif. – Finishing with a victory to close out both their trip to California and their nonconference portion of the season, the #12 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team defeated the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills this afternoon by a score of 2-1 at Toro Stadium.
The Mavericks, who now sit at 4-2 on the year, will move onto RMAC competition starting this next week.
Proving to be the team's offensive weapon once again in the win today was Kylie Wells with the senior now at five goals this season to lead the team. In addition, she ranks second in the conference in both goals and points.
Beyond Wells, Ally Wachtel also scored in today's game for her first goal of the season.
Wachtel had the first goal in the contest with her scoring in the 40th minute to give the Mavs the lead just before halftime. Wachtel's goal came via her heading it in after she received a beautiful cross on a Colorado Mesa corner kick.
Holding the lead for roughly the next 22 minutes, the Toros were able to even up the match in the 62nd minute as they used a header of their own to score as well. In the Toros' goal a long pass came from near midfield to which Emilia Sievers headed in after the barely beating out a diving Keely Wieczorek who was trying to snag the pass.
Despite the game being tied now the score would change once more as Wells came around in the 68th minute to give the Mavs their final lead of the day.
Wells was able to score after a saved shot by the Toros bounced high in the air and ended up in front of her to which she used her head to score from less than three feet away.
Holding a one-goal advantage again, the Mavs were able to successfully defend the lead this time as they played sound defense for the remainder of the game.
As a whole the Mavs outshot the Toros 10-7 while totaling six of their shots on goal. All seven of the Toros' shots were on goal in contrast. Each team both had four corner kicks as well.
Wieczorek recorded six saved in the win with her season total now racking up to 24.
