AZUSA, Calif. – Playing their first of two road games in California, the #12 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team was defeated this evening by Azusa Pacific University in a 2-0 decision at Cougar Soccer Complex.
Falling for just the second time this season, this was the Mavericks first defeat against a Division II program with their only other loss coming against Division I University of Wyoming last Sunday. In addition, this was the first time the Mavs have been shutout in eight games dating back to last season.
The Mavs are now 3-2 this year while the Cougars of Azusa Pacific move to 2-1-1.
Playing to almost a scoreless first half the Cougars took the lead of the game in the 39th minute with them scoring from three feet out after a tipped ball off the goalkeeper's hands was headed in.
The Mavs kept the score at 1-0 for the next 48 minutes as they tried to mount a comeback, but ultimately were put into a bigger hole with the Cougars scoring a second time in the 87th minute after some long passes downfield and a hammering goal into the top of the net.
In total the Cougars outshot the Mavs 15-11 in the contest with six of the Cougars shots being on goal compared to the Mavs' four.
Colorado Mesa held the advantage in corners with just one more at 4-3 but also committed more fouls as they ended with 14 opposite of the Cougars' nine.
Olivia Bariao-Arce, Ella Speerschneider and Parker Mairs each finished with two shots apiece to lead the team. Both goalkeepers recorded four saves.
Continuing their stay in California, the Mavs now take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday with that match set for a 12 P.M. MST start. Streaming can be found on the FloCollege Network as part of their pay per view plan.
