LARAMIE, Wyo. – Facing off with University of Wyoming for just the second time in school history and the first time officially, the #15 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team fell short this afternoon as they battled to a tough 1-0 loss at the Madrid Sports Complex.
With the loss the Mavericks now move to 3-1 on the young season, while the Cowgirls improve to 5-1-1. Both teams are still in their nonconference portion of the season following today's game.
In the early goings of the contest both teams pressured hard with Colorado Mesa holding off six corner kicks in just the first half.
Despite the Cowgirls holding possession for much of the first half, the score remained tied at zero after 45 minutes with Colorado Mesa showing some stellar defense. Keely Wieczorek can be attributed largely to the team's defensive effort with her totaling five of her six saves in that stretch.
Through the first half Wyoming outshot the Mavs 9-3 with six of their shots being on goal.
In the 67th minute the game finally ended its stalemate with the Cowgirls scoring the game-winner on a bit of luck.
In the Cowgirls' goal, Alyssa Glover crossed the ball into the front of the net where Kiley Balleck shot the ensuing pass towards the net but not before the ball deflected off a Maverick defender and eventually ended up scoring.
This was the first goal the Mavs have given up all season with them outscoring opponents 10-0 coming into today's match.
Colorado Mesa finished with six shots in the loss while having just one of them on goal. Parker Mairs led the team totaling two shots herself and owning the lone one on goal.
Continuing their stretch on the road, Colorado Mesa now heads to California this next weekend as they conclude nonconference play with a pair of matches at Azusa Pacific University and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Games are set for Thursday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 20.
