CMU women drop close dual to CC Tigers

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado Mesa women's tennis team dropped its final match of the Pueblo Duals on Saturday morning, 4-3 to Colorado College.

The teams split duals last spring, and this one went down to the wire. The Tigers' Lucia Moravek winning a second-set tiebreaker over Catalina Ballon, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to clinch the dual just before Sophie Hartman won the No. 6 singles match for the Mavericks, 6-3, 7-5 over Meredith Waters of Colorado College.

The Tigers won the all-important doubles point by claiming the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, but Valentina Gonzalez tied the team score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles over Avery Hickman. Colorado College, though, got a -6-2, 6-3 win by Ally Lowe over Jade Brilhante, and Aspen Young ended Devyn Rodriguez' five-match singles winning streak with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1.

Delia Maier followed with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5 for the Mavericks over Lindsay Popeo, pulling CMU within 3-2 and setting up the final two deciding matches.

After taking a week off from competition, the Mavericks wrap up the fall portion of the season with the ITA West Regional Championships from Sept. 25-27 at the Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, Calif.
