TYLER, Texas – The No. 13 Colorado Mesa baseball team fell in the first game of the best-of-three series to No. 5 Texas-Tyler Patriots 10-4 on Friday (May 16) evening at Irwin Field. The matchup was the first-ever between the two schools and is a part of the NCAA South Central Region No. 2 Tournament.
The game was delayed for over two hours due to rain and lightning in the area. In the end, the rains never came and after the game began at 9:10pm local time, there was one lightning delay in the bottom of the second inning.
The Patriots took a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning before the Mavericks got on the board.
Paul Schoenfeld singled up the middle to bring home
Stevenson Reynolds followed by a
Kolby Felix RBI groundout cut the lead to 6-2.
UT Tyler was able to plate four more runs before the Mavericks could answer back. They got another RBI groundout by
Kolby Felix and a Schoenfeld was able to score on a first and third play.
Schoenfeld finished the game 3-for-5 while
Cameron Cartwright went 2-for-3 with two walks.
Andrew Pogue was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in an inning and two-thirds of work. Pogue (3-1) didn't come back after the lightning delay that lasted just over an hour.
Emilio Flores pitched the final inning and a third with two strikeouts.
The two teams will play game two of the best-of-three series and the if necessary game tomorrow beginning at 3pm CDT.
