GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 18 Colorado Mesa baseball team extended their win streak to 13 games on Sunday (Apr. 6) afternoon as they defeated the Adams State Grizzlies by a score of 12-6 to complete the four-game sweep at The Diamond.
The Mavericks scored a singular run in the first followed by a seven run second and a one run third inning to build a 9-0 lead after three innings. The seven-run second was highlighted by a solo home run by
Jack Rogers. It was his second of the season and gave the Mavericks a 7-0 lead at the time.
They added two more in the fifth inning on an RBI double by
Kennedy Hara and a RBI single by
Cameron Cartwright to make it 11-0 after five innings of play.
Adams State battled back in the top of the seventh inning where they plated five runs to cut the lead to 11-6.
Colorado Mesa added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning as
Jack Rogers had an RBI single to left center field. Rogers finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
The Grizzlies would get one back in the top of the ninth but that would be as close as they would get.
Paul Schoenfeld and
Kolby Felix each had three hits in the game with both adding a double. Felix finished with three runs scored while Schoenfeld had two runs driven in and a stolen base.
Jordan Pace earned the start in game four and pitched extremely well. Pace retired the first six batters he faced before surrendering the only hit he allowed in his three innings of work. He struck out two and didn't allow a walk but didn't factor into the decision.
Andrew Pogue followed Pace to lead five Maverick relievers that pitched the final six innings of the game. Pogue flashed his fastball and mixed in his other pitches to allow just a walk while striking out three in two innings of work to secure his first win of the season.
Colorado Mesa moves their record to 26-8 on the season and 19-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and currently has a four and a half game lead in the standings.
The Mavericks will be on the road the next two weeks for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series. They will be in Colorado Springs next weekend for a four-game series with the Mountain Lions beginning on Friday.
