GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Justine Anderson and
Carson Dickey combined for seven goals while
Olivia Turk registered five caused turnovers and the same number of groundballs to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a 17-7 women's lacrosse victory over Westminster University in what was the Mavs' first ever post-season home game on Friday afternoon here at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Hosting the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament as the top seed for the first time in school history, the Mavericks advanced to the tournament's title game for the fifth straight year and improved to 11-5. They will once again face No. 2 seed and fellow regular season co-champion Regis in the championship match-up on Sunday at 5 p.m. after the Rangers were able to get past No. 3 seed UCCS, 13-5 in the second semifinal.
The Rangers, ranked 14
th nationally, are now 12-4 and have won ten straight games after the Mavs opened the conference season with a 16-11 road win over the Rangers in Denver, the location of the past four RMAC Tournaments, all of which have been won by the Rangers.
The Mavs have won 10 out of their last 11 this season, with their lone loss coming just less than two weeks ago by a 14-11 score to the Rangers at home.
Both squads finished 9-1 in the RMAC standings, splitting the two head-to-head decisions.
In Friday's semifinal win over the No. 4 seeded Griffins, who saw their season come to an end, the Mavericks controlled the game from the start opening up a 4-0 lead after the first quarter before extending that lead to 8-0 in the second.
The Griffins did score four of the next five goals to cut the deficit to 9-4 early in the third quarter before back-to-back Anderson goals helped the Mavs extend the lead to 13-4. She now has 36 goals and a team-high 53 points.
Anderson then tallied another goal, her fourth of the game, with 12:42 left as the Mavs went up 15-5 before cruising to win.
Dickey also added three goals in the first 17 minutes of the game, registering her third hat trick of the season.
Ella Freemon also added two goals and an assist for the victorious Mavs.
Eight other Mavericks also scored throughout the game.
Caroline Ohngemach was included in that group and added two assists and three points.
The Mavs dominated possession throughout the afternoon and finished with a big 20-6 advantage in draw controls as
Emme Rezoski tallied eight while Ai Bryant added six.
Turk set new career-highs for both caused turnovers and groundballs while fellow defender
Sadie Chappuis also added three groundballs and a caused turnover.
Freshman net-minder
Heather Hawkins finished with six saves and a pair of groundballs, picking up her tenth win of the season.
The Griffins' Jordan Williamson scored five goals to finish the season with 51. Marianna Dick also had a monster defensive game with six caused turnovers and five groundballs for the visitors. Gabriella Cheminant recorded 11 saves and seven groundballs in a complete game effort.
The Mavericks have now won 22 straight games over WU, including three victories this season by a combined 36 goals.
