SURPRISE, Ariz.— The nation's 22
nd ranked Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions were too much for the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team in a Thursday morning Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinal.
The second-seeded Sea Lions, now 16-4 on the season, won the dual, 4-0 as the seventh-seeded Mavericks dropped to 16-12 and into the consolation semifinals, where they will face No. 3 seed Concordia University Irvine on Friday morning.
The Mavs did pick up a No. 2 doubles win in Thursday's match-up as
Makenna Livingston and
Delia Maier beat Antonia Barth and Alina Kupfer, 6-3.
However, the Sea Lions were able to take the doubles point as they won the No. 3 match, 6-0 before Arianna Audelo and Quin Brady, ranked fourth in the ITA's NCAA Division II National Rankings, were able to get past CMU's
Jade Brilhante and
Devyn Rodriguez, 6-3.
In singles, the Sea Lions won the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 matches in straight sets and were up a set in the other three matches, which were left unfinished.
PLNU has two nationally-ranked players in their lineup in No. 71 Arianna Audelo, who won 7-5, 6-1 over Rodriguez at No. 2, and Kupfer, ranked 74
th nationally. Kupfer was leading Livingston, 6-4, 3-2.
PLNU will play No. 6 seed Hawai'i Pacific in Friday's semifinals after the Sharks pulled a mild 4-1 upset over CUI in the No. 3/6 match-up.
