Mavs claim historic win over Hilo in PacWest Tourney opener

SURPRISE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team made history on Wednesday, claiming their first Pacific West Championship Tournament victory in program history and their first ever win over Hawai'i Hilo, sweeping the Vulcans, 4-0 on Wednesday morning in the first round of the tournament here at the Surprise Tennis Center.

The seventh-seeded Mavericks won both of the completed doubles matches and were leading the other when the doubles point was clinched.

The Mavs then claimed straight set wins at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles to improve to 16-11 overall while setting up a quarterfinal round tilt against No. 2 seed Point Loma (15-4), who is ranked 22nd in the latest ITA NCAA Division II team rankings that were also released on Wednesday morning.

All of the quarterfinals will be played at 9 a.m. local time (10 a.m. MDT).

The Mavs will also play at the same time on Friday in either a championship or consolation semifinal and then in a placing match.

Hilo, seeded seventh, fell to 7-12 and will conclude the season with a Thursday evening consolation match against defending champion and No. 11 seed Academy of Art, which fell to No. 6 seed Hawai'i Pacific, 4-0.

All six Mavericks contributed at least one win on Wednesday in the dual as Catalina Ballon Marin went 2-0.  The Chilean freshman teamed with Jane Steur for a 6-4 No. 3 doubles.  Ballon Marin then won 6-4, 6-4 over Lehua Jordan at No. 5 singles to clinch the Mavs' historic victory.

Makenna Livingston and Delia Maier were also 6-4 winners in the second doubles flight while Jade Brilhante and Devyn Rodriguez were leading their top flight doubles match, 5-4 over Marie Cordonnier and Mila Srebro.

Rodriguez later put the Mavs up 2-0 as she blasted Srebro, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match.  Brilhante then followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Akari Ichikawa at No. 3.

Steur was also up a set and 4-3 in the second over Cami Oyama at No. 6 singles.  The Vulcans won the first set in the No. 1 and 4 singles matches, which were also left unfinished.

CMU had gone 0-8 in their previous four PacWest Tournament appearances since joining the league as affiliate members in 2021.  They were also 0-4 all-time against the Vulcans, including a 2021 tournament defeat, before Wednesday's win.
