COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 13 Colorado Mesa baseball swept a doubleheader from the host UCCS Mountain Lions on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon at Mountain Lion Field.
In game one of the day, Colorado Mesa built a 9-0 lead after four innings of play en route to an 11-4 win in the day's opener. The Mavericks pounded out 15 hits and limited UCCS to just six of their own.
The Mavericks scored one run in the first, two in the third and the big blow came in the fourth inning where they scored six runs on five hits and didn't leave any runners on base.
Paul Schoenfeld,
Kolby Felix,
Cameron Cartwright and
Ethan Nunez all had run scoring hits in the inning.
Felix would finish the game 5-for-5 with three runs scored and three runs driven in. He also had three doubles in the game and becomes the first person to do so since Johnny Carr had three doubles against Angelo State in the NCAA Super Regionals on May 28, 2022 in San Angelo, Texas.
Cartwright was the only other Maverick to have multiple hits in the game going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in.
Everyone in the starting nine recorded at least one hit.
Sage Ferguson got the start on the mound and recorded the win. Ferguson (3-0) allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits, walked four and struck out four in 94 pitches in four and a third innings pitched.
Ferguson gave way to his bullpen in the fifth and the combination of
Tristan Wolf and
JJ Almeda allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three in two and two-thirds shutout innings.
In the nightcap, Colorado Mesa fell behind 7-3 after two innings of play but they would coe back and score 18 unanswered runs from the fourth inning on in a 21-8 win. The Mavericks would get their 21 runs on 21 hits and benefitted from a pair of UCCS errors in the game.
In the fourth inning, the Mavericks would cut the lead to 7-4 on a RBI single by
Paul Schoenfeld. After a pitching change,
Kolby Felix would be hit by a pitch to bring
Cameron Cartwright to the plate. The junior outfielder gave the Mavericks the lead for good as he belted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left center field for a grand slam.
Just an inning later, Cartwright would hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field.
He finished the game 4-for-4 with three runs scored and seven runs driven in. It was almost one year ago that both
Jonathan Gonzalez and
Braden Winget both did it in a game against Adams State on May 3, 2024.
Not to be outdone,
Stevenson Reynolds hit two big flys in the win. He hit his first of the game in the top of the second inning and added a second in the top of the seventh inning. The Palisade High School product went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three runs driven in.
Josh Romans finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored and three runs driven in. Romans hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning which gave the Mavericks a 17-7 lead at the time.

Noah Neufeld, and
Kennedy Hara all had multi-hit games also.
After a rough two innings on the mound for the Mavericks, enter
Andrew Pogue who set season-highs in innings and number of pitches to earn his second win of the season on Saturday. Pogue went the final five innings in relief and allowed one run on five hits, walked four and struck out four in 102 pitches.
With the Saturday sweep, the Mavericks guarantee themselves at least a series split against the Mountain Lions heading into Sunday's series finale. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for Noon.
