CMU men drop match to Roadrunners

DENVER — The No. 34 Colorado Mesa men's tennis team was swept in singles Friday by MSU Denver, losing a 6-1 decision in the Mavs' final dual of the season against a Division II opponent.

The Mavericks defeated the Roadrunners 5-2 a week ago at the Elliott Tennis Center in Grand Junction, but MSU Denver dominated on its home courts at Assembly Athletic Complex, losing only three sets in singles on its Senior Day.

The dual was the final between the two Colorado rivals. MSU Denver is eliminating its tennis program after this season.

After missing qualifying for the PacWest Tournament by one spot, the Mavericks won the doubles point, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Henry Scheck and William Leschig claimed a 6-4 win at No. 2 and Romain Payan and Jamison Pfingston winning 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3.

Scheck took Lluc Limongi Ollers, ranked No. 29 nationally, to three sets at No. 1 singles before falling 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and Philemon Jabin also dropped a three-setter at No. 3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 against Marco Jalilian at No. 3.

Emil Hultman split sets at No. 5 with Alejandro Munoz, 6-1, 4-6, before losing a third-set tiebreaker 12-10.

The Roadrunners (10-12, 6-4 PacWest) are currently the No. 7 qualifier in the eight-team conference tournament, with final seeds announced Saturday night.

The Mavericks, 12-10 overall and 5-5 against PacWest opponents, wrap up the season at 11 a.m. Saturday against Division III Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
