COLORADO SPRINGS — The No. 34 Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team closed out its season with a convincing victory 6-1 Saturday over Colorado College.
The Mavericks (13-10) rattled off five singles wins after claiming two of three doubles matches for that team point. It was CMU's 23rd consecutive victory over the Tigers, and the Mavs lead the all-time series 30-4.
Philemon Jabin, the Mavs' lone senior, wrapped up his career with two wins, claiming his No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Dominik Kaminski after he and Emil Hultman won their No. 1 doubles match 7-6 (7-5) over Kaminski and Sam Dilworth. Jabin finished the season 12-13 in singles and 6-15 in doubles.
Hultman defeated Lenny Lehmitz 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5 singles, giving him 18 singles wins this season, eighth-best in program history in a single season. Jordan Lyles won a program-best 22 singles matches in the 2013-14 season.
Henry Scheck won a third-set tiebreaker 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) over Lucas Pastor at No. 1 singles, Romain Payan won at No. 4 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 against Dilworth, and Diogo Manzano handled Mateo Melgar 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
William Leschig nearly made it a clean sweep of singles, but dropped a tough three-setter at No. 2 against Aiden Little, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-7).
Payan and Jamison Pfingston took a 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 3 doubles over Nick Anderson and Nico Davis to clinch the doubles point. The Tigers (4-11) got a 6-2 win from Nate Beerman and Lenny Lehmitz over Leschig and Scheck at No. 2 doubles.
Despite being ranked in the top 35 in the nation, the Mavericks did not get one of eight spots in next week's PacWest Conference Tournament, finishing ranked ninth by the conference coaches.
