Felix powers Mavericks to RMAC opening win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa outfielder Kolby Felix powered the Mavericks to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opening win 11-4 over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Saturday (Mar. 8) afternoon at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.

The Surprise, Ariz. native led the game off with a solo home run to left center field which gave the Mavericks the early lead. It was his fourth big fly of the season and there was more to come just an inning later.

Felix came up with Ethan Ezor on in the second and sent the seventh pitch he saw over the fence in straight away left field for his fifth home run of the season which gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead at the time.

The junior finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs, three runs driven in and two walks to raise his average to .426 on the season.

Christos Stefanos and Stevenson Reynolds each had three hits in the game. Stefanos hit his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to give the Mavericks a 10-1 cushion. The senior finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and five runs driven in.

Eight of the Mavericks nine starters in the lineup recorded a hit with six recording an extra base-hit.

Gauge Lockhart got the game one start for the second straight week and delivered another strong performance. The Delta, Colo. native allowed one run on three hits, walked four and struck out five in six innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the season. The best inning he had was his last where he recorded two strikeouts and a ground out.

New Mexico Highlands' Bryant O'Neil had three of the Cowboys four hits in the game including a pair of home runs.

The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm from The Diamond.
