GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team swept a doubleheader from the visiting (but home on the scoreboard) New Mexico Highlands Cowboys at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex on Sunday (Mar. 9) afternoon.
In game one of the day, the Mavericks scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings on their way to a 12-1 win over the Cowboys.
Colorado Mesa benefitted from six extra base-hits and five New Mexico Highlands errors in the seven-inning matchup.
Kolby Felix,
Joey Blank, and
Stevenson Reynolds each had two hits in the game. Felix went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. He drove in the first run of the game on a double down the left field line that brought home
Paul Schoenfeld. He also drove in the final two runs of the game for the Mavericks with a two-run home run to left field.
Blank went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in. He doubled to left field in the second which brought in
Keegan Landis for his lone RBI of the game.
Reynolds went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in in the day's opener. The Mesa, Colo. product doubled to right center that brought around
Christos Stefanos and Blank on the play.
As they have all season, the Mavericks continued to get good pitching.
Ethan Voss got the start and was able to improve to 4-1 on the season. He allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out one in four and two-thirds innings. After giving up a single to the first batter of the game, Voss was able to retire the next seven batters in a row.
Jordan Ellison pitched the final two and a third innings and allowed just one hit and struck out four.
In the night cap, Colorado Mesa got eight hits, seven runs scored and six runs driven in from the first four batters of the lineup in a 10-3 win over the Cowboys.
New Mexico Highlands trotted out their pitcher with their best numbers in game three but that didn't slow the Mavericks down as they were able to get nine hits and eight runs (three earned) off him on their way to the win.
Christos Stefanos delivered the most damage from the first four hitters as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. He had an RBI single to third base as a part of the five run third inning. He also delivered a three-run home run in the fourth inning
Liam Hohenstein took the ball in game three of the series and continued to deliver. Hohenstein improved to 2-2 on the season as he allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out six in five innings of work.
CJ Zwahlen and
Cayden Clark pitched the final two innings and combined to allow one run on one hit with a strikeout.
With the wins, the Mavericks improve to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at Noon.
