FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team blanked fellow Pacific West Conference opponents Menlo College and Jessup University in a pair of Wednesday neutral-site match-ups as the Mavericks extended their winning streak to five while moving to 11-8 on the season.
The Mavs' winning streak, which has been compiled over the last four days throughout California, is their longest since CMU won the first six duals of the 2021 spring season.
CMU is now 5-1 on the trip and against fellow PacWest foes this season after winning over Menlo, 4-0 before beating Jessup, 5-0 here at Fresno Pacific University's Haak Tennis Complex.
On Wednesday, the Mavs won all seven of the completed singles matches and had leads in the two of the other five that were left unfished. They also won the doubles point in both duals.
Jane Steur continued her strong run and went 4-0 throughout the day while extending her singles winning streak to six without conceding a single game in her No. 6 wins, which both came by 6-0, 6-0 margins. She and partner
Catalina Ballon Marin have also won four straight doubles decisions.
Ballon Marin also went 3-0 with one unfinished match on Wednesday while
Makenna Livingston and
Delia Maier both went 2-0 in singles play while splitting their No. 2 doubles affairs.
In the morning match against Menlo, which fell to 3-7, the Mavericks battled back from a loss in the No. 2 doubles match to win the doubles point as
Devyn Rodriguez and
Jade Brilhante pulled out a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker of the top line battle with Anthea Weiland and Milana Hrudka.
Ballon Marin and Steur then finished off Lea Mocher and Andrea Vlasceanu, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles, giving the Mavs the early advantage.
Singles play went smoother for the Mavs as Steur blanked Carlotta Stern before Livingston, now ranked 52
nd in the country in Wednesday's ITA NCAA Division II Rankings, claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Livia Harper at No. 1 singles.
Maier then finished off the dual with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mocher at No. 4 singles as the No. 2, 3 and 5 singles matches went unfinished.
The Mavs were even more dominant against the Jessup Warriors, who fell to 1-9 on the season.
Ballon Marin and Steur started things off with a 6-0 doubles win over Antonella Cardenas and Olivia Gutierrez before Livingston and Maier clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Angel Cody and Rylie Maloney at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match was at 3 all when it was called off.
The Mavs then won the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches without conceding a single game as Maier finished off Maloney, 6-0, 6-0 to officially clinch the dual just moments before Livingston beat Briana Smith, 6-0, 6-1 before word could get around that the Mavs had won the dual.
CMU's Brilhante was also well on her way to a No. 3 singles victory, having won the first set, 6-0 over Cody while leading the second, 3-1.
The Mavs, who have played every day since Saturday, will wrap up their busy stretch when they close out the Spring Break trip on Thursday in Azusa against the nation's 18
th-ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars at 1 p.m. PDT (2 p.m. Mountain).
The Cougars are 10-2 after defeating Hawai'i Hilo, 7-0 on Tuesday.
