Mav men reach double-figures for first time since 2017

CMU takes down Menlo, 4-1

FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team reached the 10-win mark for the first time since 2017 as the Mavs dispatched the Menlo College Oaks by a 4-1 margin in a neutral-court battle here at Fresno Pacific University's Haak Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The nation's 28th-ranked Mavs improved to 10-8 overall and to 3-2 in their 6-day, 6-match swing through California while also moving to 4-3 against fellow Pacific West Conference foes this season.

They wrap up the trip on Thursday at 1 p.m. PDT (2 p.m. Mountain) in Azusa, taking on the 3-time defending conference champion Azusa Pacific University Cougars, now ranked ninth in the ITA's latest NCAA Division II Computerized Rankings that were released earlier Wednesday.

The Cougars are 11-3 this season after getting past Hawai'i Hilo, 4-3 on Tuesday.

Menlo fell to 5-2 overall and is 3-2 against conference foes.

The Mavs were especially good in the bottom half of the lineup in Wednesday's win as the Mavs won in the second and third flights to take the doubles point before sweeping the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches in straight sets to complete the victory, which was played to clinch.

Six different Mavericks contributed at least one win way as Romain Payan sealed the victory with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Henry Riccioni-Brown at No. 4 singles after teaming with Jamison Pfingston to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Angel Roldan and Erkin Tootoonchi Moghaddam at No. 3 doubles.

William Leschig and Henry Scheck had won the first doubles match, 6-2 over Tanguy Calicis and Robin Mcapline before the Oaks scratched out a 6-4 win in the No. 1 doubles match, which then turned all attention to the third flight.

The Oaks then picked up their long team point at No. 1 singles as Mcalpine won the first set of the No. 1 singles match, 6-0 over William Leschig who defaulted due to injury.

However, the Mavs quickly regained momentum with their three singles wins.

Emil Hultman delivered the first, beating Roldan, 6-1,  6-2 on Court 5 before Diogo Manzano finished off Robinson Pallault, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Payan then delivered the clincher.

The Mavs also won the first sets in the No. 2 and 3 singles matches that were left unfinished.

Scheck was leading Asger Emil, 7-5, 3-2 while Philemon Jabin won the first set against Calicis, 6-1.  The Oak senior did come back to win the second set, 6-3 as the overall dual came to a close.

Prior to this season, CMU's last double-figure win campaign came eight years ago, when they went 13-12 in 2016-17.  The 2017-18 and 2021 CMU units both won nine matches.
