AZUSA, Calif.— The ninth-ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars were too much for the visiting, shorthanded and 28
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, winning 7-0 in a Thursday afternoon men's tennis match-up between Pacific West Conference rivals here at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Cougars are now 12-3 overall after going 23-1 to win their third straight PacWest title before advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 16 in 2024.
The Mavs slipped to 10-9 overall this season and ended their 6-day, 6-match swing through California with a 3-3 mark. CMU is now 4-4 against PacWest foes with four matches remaining in the regular season, including two against MSU Denver and two against Division III Colorado College.
All of those will be played in Colorado in April.
APU is 8-0 against conference foes this season.
Action in Thursday's dual, began with singles play as the Cougars, who have three nationally-ranked individual players, won all six matches in straight sets.
The Mavericks were without the services
William Leschig, who injury defaulted his previous match on Wednesday. Leschig had played in the No. 1 spot of each of the Mavs' past six duals but gave way to
Henry Scheck as all of the Mavericks moved up one line on Head Coach
Dan MacDonald's lineup sheet.
Scheck was beaten, 6-1, 6-1 by No. 27 Elias Emilio Walter in the top flight.
Meanwhile, CMU's
Philemon Jabin battled hard, but eventually went down to No. 26 Soeren Grandke, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles.
In doubles play, which unusually followed singles action, the matches were much tighter as the Mavericks were able to pull out one victory despite having to mix-match their lineup.
Walter and Grandke, ranked 17
th nationally, won 6-3 over Jabin and
Emil Hultman in the top flight before
Diogo Manzano and
Henry Scheck grabbed a 7-5 win over Max Schmidhauser and Albertus du Plessis in what was their first match together this spring.
However, the Cougars eventually pulled out the final doubles match to seize the doubles point as Sam Bergstrand and Andrew Lee-Bliss got past
Romain Payan and
Jamison Pfingston.
