Jabin, Hultman lead Maverick men in Tuesday tennis split

FRESNO, Calif.— Doubles partners Philemon Jabin and Emil Hultman both went 2-0 in singles play and 3-1 overall throughout the day as the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team split a pair of Tuesday matches here at Fresno Pacific University's Haak Tennis Complex.

The Mavericks, ranked 29th nationally, moved to 9-8 overall and are now 2-2 on their 6-match swing through California after falling to No. 37 Fresno Pacific, 5-2, before bouncing back for a convincing 5-0 win over Jessup.

Jabin and Hultman scored the Mavs' two singles wins against the host Sunbirds (6-4) and were then part of the Mavs' comprehensive win over the winless Warriors (0-9).

In the evening match, the Mavericks squeaked out the doubles point as Romain Payan and Jamison Pfingston won the No. 3 doubles tussle in a tiebreaker, 10-8 after Jabin and Hultman blasted Michael Marci and Tanner Sitanggang in the No. 1 match-up.

The Mavs then won all four completed singles matches as Jabin defeated Vadim Francois, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, the last finished match.

Hultman had started the Mavs' winning run, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Marc Charlanne at No. 5 singles.

In between, CMU received a 6-0, 6-2 win from Henry Scheck over Diego Rodriguez at No. 2 and a 6-0, 6-1 victory from Payan over Sitanggang at No. 4.

The No. 1 and 6 singles matches were left unfinished although William Leschig was on the verge of a top flight victory, leading Marci, 6-1, 5-2.

In the earlier dual against FPU, the Mavs lost the doubles point but evened the score at 1 when Jabin finished off a 6-3, 6-1 win over Martin Ramirez at No. 3.

However, the Sunbirds went on to win the next three completed singles matches before Hultman managed a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Emilio Seelbach to record the Mavs' other team point.

CMU will remain in Fresno on Wednesday to take on Menlo in another neutral site match-up at 12:30 p.m. PDT (1:30 p.m. Mountain).
