SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team picked up its second road win in as many days, defeating the Westmont College Warriors by a 6-1 margin on Monday afternoon and evening. The Mavericks leveled their overall record to 8-8 with the victory and are now 2-1 against fellow Pacific West Conference opponents.
The Warriors slipped to 4-11.
Monday's dual was slated to begin at noon but was pushed back four hours due to rainfall in the area. The teams then started the action at the Warriors' on-campus Abbott Tennis Courts but moved to the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club to complete the action under lights.
Three Mavericks in
Makenna Livingston,
Delia Maier and
Devyn Rodriguez went 2-0 throughout the day as the Mavericks won the doubles point for the eighth time this season while improving to 8-0 when doing so.
The Mavericks then won five of the six singles matches, pulling out a pair of 3-setters in the process.
Livingston delivered the clinching point in the top flight as she came from a set down to defeat Sophia Ostovany, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Rodriguez enjoyed an easier 6-4, 6-3 decision over Johanna Winkler at No. 2 singles to put the Mavs up 2-0 overall before the Warriors picked up their lone match win of the day at No. 3 singles from Justie Spitzer.
However, the Mave answered right back at No. 4 singles as Maier won 6-3, 6-0 over Sabina Salva to make the overall score, 3-1.
After Livingston clinched the dual with her victory, the Mavs also got wins from
Jane Steur and
Kayla Huish.
Steur, who has started out the Mavs' 7-match, 6-day Spring Break swing through California with a 3-0 singles mark, moved up to the No. 5 singles spot and came from a set down to defeat Kaley Houshmand, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5). Huish, who played at No. 6, was 6-4, 6-1 winner over Avala Elwood and registered her first dual meet win of her young career.
In doubles, the Mavs were dominant in the first two flights as
Jade Brilhante and Rodriguez won 6-1 over Salva and Winkler at No. 1. Livingston and Maier also won by the same margin at No. 2 over Elwood and Ostovany.
The No. 3 doubles match was left unfinished with the Warrior pair holding a narrow 4-3 over
Catalina Ballon Marin and Steur.
The Mavericks will now head to Fresno to play at Fresno Pacific on Tuesday afternoon at Noon PDT (1 p.m. Mountain). The Sunbirds are currently 3-11 and have lost four straight but are a perfect 5-0 all-time against CMU.
