Maverick men match win total from past two years with 4-2 road win

CMU moves above .500 overall while evening PacWest mark at 2-2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— William Leschig and Romain Payan both went 2-0 and led the nation's 29th-ranked Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team to a 4-2 road win over Westmont College here at the Warriors' Abbott Tennis Courts and the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.

The win allowed the Mavericks to match their 2022-23 and 2023-24 season win totals and was their second over a Pacific West Conference foe in the last nine days.  CMU is now 8-7 overall and 2-2 against conference opponents after managing just one unofficial conference win in each of the past three seasons.  CMU went 8-12 last year and was 8-14 overall in 2022-23.

The Warriors fell to 2-11 overall and are 1-10 against PacWest foes after claiming their first win over a conference opponent since moving to the NCAA Division II level on Sunday, 7-0 over Jessup.

The PacWest does not keep any official conference standings although the results of head-to-head matches are a significant factor in the PacWest Championship Tournament selection and seeding process.  Eight of the league's 12 men's teams will ultimately be selected for the Apr. 17-19 event in Surprise, Arizona.

In Monday's dual, which moved off campus and under the lights after the action got underway on the WC campus, the Mavericks got off to a quick start winning both completed doubles matches before taking the first two completed singles matches to build a 3-0 lead.

However, the Warriors came back to record tight wins at No. 3 and 2 singles before Emil Hultman delivered the dual-clinching victory at No. 5 singles, by a 6-4, 6-1 scoreline over Valentin Dignac.

In doubles, the Mavs won by convincing 6-2 and 6-1 margins in the second and third flights, respectively.  The top flight match was left unfinished at 5-5.

Leschig and Henry Scheck won Jonathan Ball and Diego De Cooman at No.  2 while Payan and partner Jamison Pfingston were able to cruise over Owen Vander Ark and Dignac.

Payan then delivered the first singles point at No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Antoine De Cooman before Leschig posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Austin Stone at No. 1 singles.

Goor Adiv then put the Warriors on the board with his 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over CMU's Philemon Jabin at No. 3 singles before Diego De Cooman won a tight 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision over Scheck at No. 2.

The No. 6 singles match was left unfinished.

The Mavericks are now heading across the state to Fresno.  They will play twice on Tuesday, facing No. 37 Fresno Pacific at noon PDT (1 p.m. Mountain), a later start time than previously announced.  The Mavs will then take on Jessup in a neutral-court match-up at the Sunbirds' Haak Tennis Complex in the twilight hours, slated to begin at 5 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. Mountain), which is also an hour later than originally planned.
