GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team earned the series win on Monday (Mar. 17) after defeating the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves 13-8 in the series finale at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
Colorado Mesa scored in six of the eight innings they batted and had a huge bottom of the sixth inning where they sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs. They pounded out 16 total hits with six going for extra bases.
The Mavericks built a 7-3 lead after four innings of action, but the ThunderWolves came back by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-6 heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Kolby Felix led off the inning with a solo home run to straight away center field for his eighth of the season. Just one batter later,
Christos Stefanos went big fly to right center field for his fourth of the season and made the score 9-6 at the time.
Later in the inning,
Josh Romans had an RBI single to left field and while
Kennedy Hara had a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Romans into score. In the middle of those plays,
Declan Wiesner scored on a first and third play where he wound up stealing home to make it 12-6 after six.
Romans finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs driven in and a home run in the third while
Paul Schoenfeld went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Stevenson Reynolds hit a solo home run in the fourth that carried over the wall in right field.
David Craig earned the win in relief of starter
Jordan Pace and is now 2-1 on the season. Pace went three innings and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four before giving way to Craig.
Cayden Clark made his third appearance of the weekend in today's finale and retired all four batters he faced including getting Kysen Howard to pop-up with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth.
With the series win, the Mavericks record improves to 14-8 on the season and 7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They are currently tied for the top spot in the conference with the Regis Rangers who are also 7-1 in conference action.
Colorado Mesa will be back home on Friday when they host Colorado Christian in a four-game series at The Diamond.
