GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Gauge Lockhart was dialed in under the lights Friday at The Diamond.
The Colorado Mesa right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Colorado Christian in the first home night game of the season. He gave up a one-out single to shallow center field in the Mavericks' 18-2 victory. After a fielder's choice erased that runner, Lockhart got a nice ovation when he was lifted for Spye Turnbeaugh. The Cougars' William Brassil hit a two-run home run, the only other hit Colorado Christian (6-20, 3-6 RMAC) managed in the run-rule game that ended after 6½ innings.
Lockhart, a junior from Delta, had outstanding command the entire night and finished his 5 2/3-inning stint with five strikeouts, one run and one hit. He threw 70 pitches, 45 for strikes.
Only three batters reached base against him through five innings, on two walks and one hit batter. He recorded six outs on ground balls, six on fly balls and the five strikeouts.
Andrew Pogue finished up in the seventh, consistently throwing in the mid- to high-90s, walking one batter and striking out three.
With Lockhart shutting down the Cougars' offense, the Colorado Mesa batters scored 18 runs on 10 hits, six for extra bases. Paul Schoenfeld led off the bottom of the first with a home run and the Mavericks (15-8, 8-1 RMAC) scored in all but one inning.
They scored three in the first, five in the second, added one in the fourth and put the game out of reach with an eight-run fifth inning. Another run came across in the sixth.
Christos Stefanos hit a pair of doubles, Jackson Helberg had a pinch-hit double and Cameron Cartwright hit a three-run home run in the big fifth inning. The Cougars walked the bases loaded right after Cartwright's shot, and pinch-hitter Joey Mazzetti hit a towering, jaw-dropping grand slam deep over the left field bullpen.
The Mavericks took advantage of two CCU errors, seven wild pitches, one passed ball and one balk, leading to eight unearned runs. Every CMU starter reached base safely and scored at least one run and all but three had at least one hit.
Cartwright and Mazzetti had four RBI each, and Schoenfeld and Stefanos drove in two runs apiece. Colorado Mesa drew a dozen walks and struck out only three times against five Colorado Christian pitchers.
The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Diamond and wrap up the four-week homestand with a 9-inning game at noon Sunday.
