COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Less than 24 hours after claiming one of the program's most historic wins on Friday night over nationally-ranked Regis, the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in the second quarter en route to an 18-15 win over another one of their biggest Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals on Sunday afternoon.
Courtney Havel followed her 6-goal effort in Friday's win with another 5-goal outing in Sunday's win at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs as the Mavericks improved to 3-4 overall and took sole possession of first place in the early RMAC standings at 2-0.
Caroline Ohngemach also tallied five goals in what was CMU's 14
th straight win over the Mountain Lions, a team they have defeated in the semifinal round of each of the last four RMAC Tournaments.
UCCS, which scored five straight goals in a span of 5:28 of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 16-13 ran out of time and fell to 4-2 overall and to 1-1 in the conference after the teams came in tied with CSU Pueblo atop the league standings.
The Mavs' 18 goals are a season-high as five different Mavericks scored two or more while
Justine Anderson chipped in another goal along with four of the Mavs' eight assists.
The Mavs' dominated the possession game, winning 28 of the game's 37 draw controls while finishing with a 38-33 advantage in total shots.
The Mavs also converted on 7 of 11 free position shot attempts.
They scored three of those free position shot goals in the opening quarter and broke open what was a 3-3 tie with a 4-goal run over the final five minutes of the quarter. Havel scored twice in that run.
The Mavs then opened up a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes of the second quarter on
Courteney Murray and Ohngemach goals before re-establishing a 6-goal cushion (11-5) at the half.
UCCS did cut into the deficit scoring three of the first four goals of the third quarter before
Ali Bryant, Ohngemach and Havel all scored in the final 2:01 of the frame to build the Mavs' lead back to seven at 15-8.
Ohngemach then added her fourth goal of the afternoon at the 13:39 mark of the fourth to open up a 16-8 lead before the Mountain Lions responded with five tallies to cut the gap to 16-13 with 5:19 left.
However, Ohngemach and
Carson Dickey then scored back-breaking goals just 48 seconds apart to put the Mavs ahead 18-13 before holding on for the win.
Dickey recorded her first hat trick of the season while Bryant and Murray chipped in two goals apiece. Bryant also had 11 draw controls, the most of any Maverick this season. Ohnegmach had eight draw controls and four groundballs.
Freshman
Heather Hawkins, playing just miles south of her hometown of Palmer Lake, made 11 saves in the complete game effort in net. She also claimed seven groundballs.
UCCS' Sofia Watts scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Mountain Lion attack while Emma Grace Martin added two goals and five points. Sydnee-Anne Moeller also had three goals off the bench.
After playing six of their first seven games on the road, the Mavericks will now be at home for three straight and five of their next six, beginning Saturday (Mar. 22) at noon when they will face the Westminster University Griffins (2-4, 0-2 RMAC).
