Mavs fall in PacWest, Spring Break opener

Steur wins at No. 6

LA MIRADA, Calif.— Jane Steur claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles while Devyn Rodriguez dominated the first set against a nationally-ranked opponent, highlights of an otherwise tough day that saw the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team drop a 6-1 decision to host Biola University on Saturday afternoon here at the Biola Tennis Center.

CMU, playing a fellow Pacific West Conference opponent for the first time this season, dropped to 6-8 with the loss while the Eagles improved to 7-4.

Biola claimed the doubles point with 6-3 wins at No. 2 and 3 while the top flight match-up was left unfinished at 5-5.

The  Eagles then won the first five singles matches before Steur salvaged a point for CMU to improve to 7-4 in duals and 7-5 overall.  The Dutchwoman defeated Alexis Romano, 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 2 singles, Rodriguez won the first set, 6-1 over Eagle sophomore Kailee Mazzeo, who is ranked 72nd in the nation, according to the most recent ITA NCAA Division II rankings.  However, Mazzeo rallied to win the second set, 6-4 and then took the match with a 6-1 third set victory.

Elsewhere, No. 69 Isabella Chavarria was a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Mavs' 33rd-ranked Makenna Livingston in a top flight match-up of nationally ranked players.

The Eagles also won 6-2, 6-4 decisions at both No. 4 and No. 5 singles before Dafne Andres Paton was pushed to the limit at No. 3, eventually overcoming CMU junior Jade Brilhante, 7-5, 7-5.

Saturday's encounter was the first of seven the Mavericks will play throughout California over six days.

They continue the stretch on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. PDT (10:30 a.m.) at Cal State LA, which is 1-6 on the year.
