Biola too much for Maverick men

CMU falls in Spring Break trip opener

LA MIRADA, Calif.— The Biola University Eagles blanked the visiting Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 7-0 in a match that was much closer than the scoreline would have indicated on Saturday afternoon here at the Biola Tennis Center.

The Eagles improved to 5-6 overall and 4-5 against Pacific West Conference foes.  The 29th-ranked Mavericks dropped to 7-7 overall and 1-2 against conference opponents as they started a stretch that will see the Mavs play six times in six days throughout California.

The doubles point could not have been any closer as the Eagles won at No. 2 and 3 doubles in tie-breakers while the No. 1 match was heading to the same but left unfinished.
In singles, the Eagles won in straight sets at No. 1, 4 and 6 but were pressed to three sets on the other three courts.

At No. 2, Henry Scheck dropped the opening set to Patricio Larrea by a 6-1 score.  However, Scheck won the second, 6-3 to force a third, when Larrea was able to prevail, 6-2.

The No. 3 singles match, the last to be decided, was even tighter as BU's Jules Zanarelli and CMU's Philemon Jabin split a pair of tie-breakers after Zanarelli won the first set, 6-4.  Jabin took the second set breaker, 7-4 before Zanarelli scratched out the final tiebreaker, 7-5.

Although the dual was already decided, Mateo Rivas was able to edge CMU's Emil Hultman at No. 5 singles.  Rivas won the first set, 6-4 before Hultman won the second in a tiebreaker  Rivas then won the match tiebreaker, 10-7.

The Maverick men will be off on Sunday but will support the CMU women at Cal State LA before both teams will head up the Pacific Coast to Santa Barbara to face Westmont on Monday.
