Mavs' slow start costly in loss to No. 20 Panthers

Murray records first career hat-trick

MELBOURNE, Fla.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team fell behind 7-1 early in the second quarter and dropped a 15-8 decision to the nation's 20th-ranked Florida Tech on Thursday evening here at the Panthers' Rick Stottler Field.

The Mavericks won the second-half scoring battle, 5-4 but could not overcome the early deficit while falling to 1-2.

Florida Tech improved to 3-3 with the victory as Sophia Scichilone had a monster night with four goals and four assists.

CMU's Courteney Murray recorded her first career hat-trick with three goals while Courtney Havel and Carson Dickey added two apiece.

Justine Anderson also scored while coming off the bench and led the Mavs with three groundballs.

Seven of CMU's eight goals were assisted as six different Mavs provided the helpers.  Ali Bryant had two.  She also recorded five draw controls.

Freshman goalie Heather Hawkins made eight saves in the second half, conceding just four goals after Shannon Murphy played in the first half.

Bridget Robinson picked up the win for the Panthers, going the distance while making eight saves.

Gillian Craig and Sofie Bender also combined for seven goals in support of the Scichilone-led Panther attack.

Havel tied the game at 1 with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter, before the Panthers went on a tear scoring five goals in s span of 4:02 later in the quarter.

The Panthers then went up 7-1, 40 seconds into the second quarter through Scichilone before Murray scored a pair of second-quarter goals on assists from Cassidy Keykal and Caroline Ohngemach in the first six minutes of the second quarter.

However, the Panthers went on to score three more goals in the quarter to take an 11-3 halftime lead en route to the victory.

Murray has now scored in all three of the Mavs' games, recording six in total.  She had just two in her 2024 freshman season.

CMU's run of four straight games against nationally-ranked opponents and their stay in Florida will continue on Saturday when the head to Saint Leo to face the ninth-ranked Lions at 11 a.m. EST (9 a.m. Mountain). - NEW TIME
