Mavs fall to No. 9 Lions

Hawkins makes first start in net as Havel, Anderson combine for seven goals

SAINT LEO, Fla.— Freshman goaltender Heather Hawkins made 14 saves while Courtney Havel and Justine Anderson combined for seven goals at the offensive end to lead the Colorado Mesa University's in Saturday's game at national poll No. 9 Saint Leo here at the Lions' University Turf Stadium.
 
The Lions improved to 5-1 with the 18-10 win while the Mavericks slipped to 1-3.
 
The Lions took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and led 9-4 at the half before both teams scored two goals in the third.  The Lions then pulled away with a 7-4 advantage in fourth quarter goals.
 
Havel scored four goals in Saturday's game and leads the Mavs with 13 this season having scored two more in all four contests.  Anderson has also scored in all four contests and recorded her first hat-trick of 2025.
 
Both Mavs finished with five points as Anderson tallied two assists while Havel had one.
 
Saint Leo's Jana Nuss scored four times for the victorious Lions, including back-to-back goals 1:08 apart near the end of the first quarter to give the Lions a 5-1.
 
The Lions won 23 of the 32 draw controls and finished with a 48-23 advantage in total shots.
 
Hawkins made her first collegiate start and was busy throughout the day as the Lions put 32 of their shots on frame.  She also claimed eight groundballs and caused two turnovers.
 
Fellow freshman Sadie Chappuis also racked up defensive numbers, recording four groundballs.  Sophie Astone also had two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
 
Ali Bryant led the Mavs with four draw controls and dished out two assists.

Caroline Ohngemach and Avery Irlbeck also scored goals while Ohngemach added an assist.

After playing their first four games away from home in Missouri and Florida, the Mavs will now return home to host 13th-ranked Grand Valley State.  The Lakers are currently 1-0 and will play at Quincy (Ill.) on Sunday before making the trip to Colorado for games against CMU and No. 11 Regis.
